WBLS Classic Set
I always enjoyed listening to Friday and Saturday night radio shows when I lived in New York City. NYC radio was an entity all its own. When DJs had more control of what they played there would be plenty of ‘local hits’ that would get wildly popular in the city that you would never hear anywhere else on the radio.
There were even whole genres that could only get critical mass in cities like NYC, Miami, and L.A.. A prime example is freestyle which lasted from about 1998 to 1992. You might remember Lisa Lisas “Wonder if I take you home” or Expos’s “Point of no return”.
Here’s a prime example of what to expect when tuning to a WBLS rap show on a Friday or Saturday night in 1988
