Tsunami Relief
I guess with the number of people involved I was bound to know at least one person actually in the fray.
A friend of mine from work moved back to Bangalore, India recently. Her town is a few hours inland and wasn’t directly affected by the tsunami but she said a lot of her friends are heading to the coast to help out with relief efforts. Anyone that is not going to the coast is staying behind to collect supplies and money to help the relief effort.
Tee is a guy I’ve DJed with on a couple of occasions. He’s on a worldwide walkabout with his GF and narrowly escaped: http://ssbd.blogspot.com/
Following the news is kind of a pain because I’m a guy that likes facts. Stories are coming out on the Tsunami so fast that every writer is using the latest facts they can find but by the time they are published, things are all out of wack.
So I’ve taken to just watching one set of facts: the Amazon collection totals for the Red Cross (where I gave my donation).
Its nice to see that people are not afraid to give. Congress just passed an extension of tax writeoffs for Tsunami relief so people can claim the donation on their 2004 taxes instead of waiting another year.
When I logged on to donate on 12/29/04, $1.5mil had been collected, donations averaged $50 each
I checked a couple of days ago and donations were up to $7mil and averaged $80 each
Today donations are up to $15mil and people are giving and average of $82 each
